报告题目:Understanding the Communication of Data Stories: A User-Centered Perspective


Recent years have witness a growing trend of using data to tell stories. Since storytelling is about communicating certain data facts to a target audience, understanding what makes the communication effective becomes an important issue. In this talk, I will share my research about the communication of data stories in a user-centered paradigm, such as how the visual design of data stories leads to different perception of emotions and how the manipulation of narratives changes the way people digest the data.


Xingyu Lan received the MA degree in journalism and communication from Peking University, China, in 2019. She is currently working toward the PhD degree at Intelligent Big Data Visualization Lab (iDVX Lab) at the College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University, Shanghai, China. Her research interests include data-driven storytelling, visualization design, and human-computer interaction.

报告题目:Learning to Automate Chart Layout Configurations Using Crowdsourced Paired Comparison


Existing visualisation tools usually determine parameters using predefined heuristics, producing sub-optimal appearances. People can repeatedly adjust multiple parameters (e.g., chart size, gap) to create visually appealing charts. However, this trial-and-error process is unsystematic and time-consuming, without a guarantee of improvement. In this talk, I will share an ML method that automates chart parameter configurations by learning from human preference.


Aoyu Wu is currently a PhD student at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) under the supervision of Prof. Huamin Qu. He investigates how AI could facilitate the creation, sharing, and use of data visualisation, and how visualisations could promote the decision-makings in different application scenarios such as e-learning and smart campus. His work has been recognised by the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2019 and Asia-Pacific ICT Awards 2019.



马昱欣博士先后于2012年、2017年在浙江大学计算机科学与技术学院获得学士与博士学位,曾任新加坡国立大学SeSaMe研究中心实习研究员、美国亚利桑那州立大学VADER实验室博士后,于2021年7月起加入南方科技大学计算机科学与工程系任副研究员。主要研究方向为大数据可视化与可视分析,包括基于可视分析的可解释人工智能方法、高维数据可视分析、时空数据的可视分析与应用。目前发表论文20余篇,近年在IEEE VIS、TVCG、CG&A等国际重要会议期刊上发表多篇长文;曾获得CVMJ年度最佳论文提名。参与可视化专著及教材编写2部。更多信息可见
