How do you actually choose the right legacy software modernization company?

We’re starting to look for a partner to modernize our legacy system, and honestly it’s harder than expected. There are so many companies offering “modernization,” but it’s not always clear what they actually do — some talk about cloud migration, others about full rewrites.

From what I understand, the biggest risks aren’t even technical — they’re things like losing business logic, choosing the wrong partner, or trying to replace everything at once instead of doing it step by step.

Yeah, that’s exactly the tricky part — most failures come from planning and execution, not technology. A lot of companies underestimate how much critical logic is buried inside legacy code. If a vendor doesn’t properly analyze and preserve it, you can end up with a “modern” system that actually breaks real workflows.

Also, the whole “big bang rewrite” idea sounds nice, but in practice it’s super risky. Most experienced teams recommend phased modernization, where parts of the system are upgraded gradually while everything keeps running.
