Priapism is a prolonged penile erection. The erection, whether complete or partial, continues for several hours after sexual stimulation or is not induced by it. The main types of priapism are ischemic and non-ischemic. Ischemic priapism is a medical emergency. Although priapism is a rare condition overall, it is common in certain groups, such as people with sickle cell anemia. Prompt treatment of priapism is usually necessary to prevent tissue damage that can lead to the inability to achieve or maintain an erection. Priapism most often affects men over 30 years of age, but it can begin in childhood in men with sickle cell anemia.
