JustinParticipantOrb of Scouring in Path of Exile 1 wipes magic/rare mods to a clean base while keeping sockets, links and quality—ideal for Scour-Alch loops, alt-regal crafting, safer map rerolls and regret vendors.
In Path of Exile, you’ll hit a point where you’re staring at a half-decent rare and thinking, “Do I fix this, or do I just start over.” That’s where an Orb of Scouring earns its keep. It wipes a magic or rare item back to a normal base while leaving the stuff you actually paid time for—quality, sockets, and links—untouched. If you’re rebuilding a six-link or keeping a high item level base ready for another try, scours save your sanity. And if you’re short on crafting currency mid-league, some players top up through marketplaces like U4GM so they can keep rolling without pausing their whole build plan.
Where Scours Actually Come From
Yes, they drop. Sometimes in chunky stacks if you’re blasting high-tier maps with decent juice. But drops aren’t a plan, they’re a bonus. The steady route is vendor trade: 4 Orbs of Chance for 1 Orb of Scouring. Early on it feels rough, then you realise Chance orbs pile up when you’re mapping fast and not picking up every random rare. If you’re still starving, Heist is usually kinder than people admit—currency chests and reward rooms can cough up scours more often than your average map run. Keep an eye out for strongboxes too, especially Arcanist ones, because they’re weirdly generous when they hit the right roll.
The Simple Loop: Scour Then Alch
Most of the time, you’re not “crafting,” you’re just trying to land usable mods without torching your stash. That’s the Scour–Alch loop. Step 1: take a good base and hit it with an Orb of Alchemy. Step 2: if it comes out bad, scour it. Step 3: alch again. It’s basically a budget reroll that keeps you moving, and it’s way easier to stomach than feeding Chaos Orbs into an item that keeps rolling garbage. It also feels cleaner mentally: you’re making fresh attempts on the same base instead of chasing sunk cost.
Slower Crafting: Alt-Regal and “No Shame” Resets
If you’re the patient type, scours are what make the Alt–Regal routine tolerable. Step 1: spam Alterations until you hit the one or two mods you actually care about. Step 2: tidy with an Augment if you need it. Step 3: Regal and hope the added mod isn’t dead weight. When it is dead weight, you don’t have to pretend it’s fine—you just scour and go back to Alterations. It’s repetitive, sure. But it’s also how people build strong items without gambling the whole thing in one click.
Little Utility Tricks You’ll Use All League
Scours aren’t only for gear. If a map rolls something that’s going to get you killed—reflect, no regen, whatever—scour it and reroll instead of donating experience to the ground. There’s also the gem trick: sell a skill gem with an Orb of Scouring to drop the gem by one level, which is clutch when you accidentally overlevel a Cast when Damage Taken setup. And when you’re rebuilding around a new weapon or chest base, it helps to have options ready—some players even browse POE 1 iteams to line up the exact base they want before they start the next round of scouring and rolling.
