Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is gearing up for its fifth season, bringing with it a ton of fresh content. As expected, this season introduces a slew of new playable Operators, with popular campaign character Graves now playable online. Players can prepare enough Call of Duty Points in the game.
Graves’ reappearance in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 likely indicates his involvement in the upcoming Modern Warfare 3. While this may bring some benefits to the Modern Warfare 3 narrative, the addition of Graves could also have a detrimental effect on the story of the Modern Warfare remake series.
Graves’ role in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Phillip Graves plays a major role in Modern Warfare 2’s narrative as the head of the Shadow Company, a private mercenary group. Graves and Shadow Company are initially allies of the player-controlled Task Force 141, but shocking events ensue. After establishing contact with Task Force 141, it was revealed that Generals Graves and Shepard were actively involved in covering up the loss of the nuclear weapons. Graves then plays an antagonistic role in the rest of the MW2 narrative. For most of the end of the campaign, players will be attacking the Shadow Company compound in search of Graves.
This culminated in a showdown between Thorpe McTavish and Graves, with Soap destroying the tank Graves was operating. It’s widely believed that Graves died during the encounter, though recent developments in MW2’s multiplayer suggest otherwise. Graves is now a playable operator in MW2’s multiplayer and Warzone 2, and the character’s late revival could indicate his continued presence in the series.
Potential issues with graves in Modern Warfare 3
The timing of Graves’ reappearance in Modern Warfare 2 likely indicates that he will have a role in the rumored upcoming Modern Warfare 3’s story. If Graves is confirmed to have survived his battle with the Soap, it will be an unforgettable shock, though the MW3 narrative may be slightly affected by his inclusion.Despite being exclusively dominated by Sledgehammer Games, MW3 will continue the established running narrative of the other two recent reboots. As the third installment in the new Modern Warfare trilogy, Modern Warfare 3 will face intense narrative pressure to bring the many factions and characters involved to a satisfying conclusion.
Of course, the random shepherd general is expected to be a lingering antagonist in Modern Warfare 3, and rumors also suggest the game will introduce a brand new take on CoD’s iconic villain Makarov. These are already two high-profile characters that demand a lot of narrative attention in MW3, and adding Graves to the antagonist roster could have a detrimental effect on the game.
MW3 may struggle to give Graves, Makarov, and Shepard equal screen time, leading to a potentially confusing or rushed ending that tries to juggle all of these antagonists. While Graves is a memorable character in MW2, his story does have a pretty solid ending that’s best left alone. When considering how Makarov will be introduced and dealt with within the story space of MW3, the focus on Graves may take away from one of the most iconic villains in both Modern Warfare and Call of Duty.
